Anciano '35 Year Old Vines' Garnacha, Calatayud, Spain
Readers rated this wine:
Stylish, expressive, juicy.
A wine made by Master of Wine Norrel Robertson, from old vines set at between 2000-3000 feet above sea level. At (roughly) $20, it's a bargain. Strawberry jam and licorice aromas roll into spice and patchouli. It is juicy and youthful with expressive fruit and fine textural tannins. A stylish red, balanced and delicious for tapas, roasted meats and tomato-based sauces. ©copyright 2018 Daenna Van Mulligen

Anciano 'Aged 7 Years' Reserva Tempranillo, DO Valdepenas Spain
Readers rated this wine:
Exceptional, pretty, fresh.
Exceptional value for a wine aged 7 years (now 10 according to my math), and a best seller in our market.
It doles out strawberry confiture and dried rose petals with distinct grape-y notes alongside licorice. It is dry and earthy yet pretty, with juicy red berry flavours. Great balance and freshness, an honest wine with notable length.
Reserva wines in DO Valdepenas must undergo a minimum aging period of 36 months, at least 12 of which are spent in oak barrels with a maximum capacity of 330 liters, and the remaining time in the bottle. ©copyright 2018 Daenna Van Mulligen

Emiliana 'Coyam' Colchagua Valley, Chile
Readers rated this wine:
Outstanding, prodigious, supple.
It's hard to forget standing in Emiliana's verdant, biodynamic vineyard on a surprisingly hot November day in 2008, with sweat trickling down my back - it was also my first biodynamic vineyard experience.
It is a consistently prodigious wine from the valley of big reds, Colchagua. An organic blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Carmenere and Petit Verdot, which is concentrated and complete. Expect notes of smoked meat and sweet brown spices are layered with sarsaparilla, dried violets, cedar chips and robust wild berry aromas. It is supple in texture, generous in weight and is borderline brooding. The finish suggests dried fruits and pipe tobacco. *Reviewed in Vines Magazine, spring 2018. ©copyright 2018 Daenna Van Mulligen

Emiliana 'Novas Gran Reserva' Colchagua Valley, Chile
Readers rated this wine:
Bravo, generous, outstanding.
This organic blend of Carmenere and Cabernet Sauvignon is outstanding, and has a unique savoury and umami character. Notes of fragrant blackberry and blueberry are woven with grilled bell peppers, succulent spices, roasted herbs and capsicum. Generous and liqueur-like in weight with a supple texture, it offers incredible concentration and balance. Wild berries, dark cocoa, bay leaf and espresso ride the wave of a long and smooth finish. ©copyright 2018 Daenna Van Mulligen

Finca Las Moras 'Paz' Malbec, San Juan Cuyo, Argentina
Readers rated this wine:
Silky, woven, harmonious.
From the Pedernal Valley in San Juan in Mendoza province, this wine comes from vines grown at 1350m above sea level, it's been a few vintages since I've had this wine, and it's still as wonderful as ever. The nose is fresh and scented with liberal black current, pipe tobacco, chocolate, toasted spices and vanilla. Like the nose the palate is velvety. It has a silky entry and lively purple fruit flavours underscored by spice. Woven and harmonious with a chocolaty finish.
Pair: Grilled meats and sausages, wild mushroom ravioli, hard cheeses. Pairs great with Gone Crackers Parmesan & Rosemary ©copyright 2023 Daenna Van Mulligen
