Berlucchi is an iconic house and pioneer in Italy; it was the first winery to release a metodo classico Franciacorta in the 60s and claims to be the most powerful premium sparkling wine brand in Italy.
The name Franciacorta comes from the terms Francae Curtes, name given during the feudal period to the communities of French Benedictine monks who settled in the region to cultivate the vine. These communities were exempted from the princely taxes in exchange for their services. Francae Curtes (franc de taxe in French) therefore means free of taxes. It then evolved through time to the Italian version Franciacorta.
The '61 is Chardonnay with separately vinified 10% Pinot Noir which come from a selection of old vines. The assemblage of the cuvee is decided in the spring following harvest. Matured for a minimum of 24 months on lies followed by an additional 2 months after disgorgement, in this bottle that occurred in 2020.
A fine bead and golden-yellow hue, this outstanding fizz has notes of creamy yellow fruits and lemon curds, vague toasted nuts and autolytic undertones. It has a creamy mousse and notable weight and concentration. Flavours of yellow fruits, hazelnuts and pie crust echo the nose. Impressive length; a complex, elegant and complete sparkling.
