Muscular, woven, spiced.
While I've not had much opportunity to taste the wines of Culmina this is the second vintage of Hypothesis the first being the 2013) I've tasted.
Located on the Golden Mile Bench, Culmina was established by the Triggs family (of Jackson-Triggs fame) in 2007 and was sold in 2019 to Arterra Wines Canada.
Hypothesis in Greek means proposal, is a flagship Bordeaux red (Cab Sauv, Cab Franc, Merlot), which was aged in a combination of new and second fill French oak barrels.
Notes of balsamic and molasses, dried cherries and prune, burnt chocolate nibs and charred red bell peppers are underscored by smoked meat. In the mouth, similar flavours of black cherry, bitter chocolate and roasted coffee beans mingle with resin, brown spice and maldon salt. Smooth, woven and muscular, I recommend drinking this one now.
Second review: May 2022 Smoked meat and soy sauce, salted licorice, charred orange peel and dried herbs are wrapped in chocolate, tobacco, dried cherries and prune aromas. It has a salty/savoury character and flavours of bouillon, wild herbs, dried fruit and peppery spices. Nice freshness still and sooty cocoa tannins trail on the finish.
