Additional Information on Brunello di Montalcino from the consorzio:

The Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino was created in 1967 right after the recognition of its D.O.C., as a free association of producers, intent on safeguarding their wine.

It has throughout these years represented an instrument of scrupulously responsible self-discipline, assembling a congregation of estates old and new, small and large, so that the combined time-tested practices have become a common strategy for qualitative success.

The Consortium safeguards controls and promotes all four denomination wines of Montalcino: Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montalcino, Moscadello di Montalcino, and Sant’Antimo.

100% of the producers, a unique case in the whole of Italy, are registered with the Consortium that had been put in charge, by the Ministry of Agricultural Policies, of safeguarding and controlling the wines.

There are 250 producers in all (of whom 208 are bottlers), all of them registered with the Consortium. All together the hectares of vineyards in the Montalcino territory amount to 3500 divided as follows: 2100 hectares grown with Brunello di Montalcino; 510 hectares with Rosso di Montalcino; 50 hectares with Moscadello di Montalcino; 480 hectares with Sant’Antimo Doc; the remainder is planted with Igt.

On average every year 9,000,000 bottles of Brunello di Montalcino are produced; 4,500,000 of Rosso di Montalcino, 40,000 of Moscadello di Montalcino and 400,000 of Sant’Antimo.

Around 65% of the production is exported and the total value of the average turnover of the wine sector in Montalcino is 160 Million Euros.

WineDiva.ca was launched prior to WineScores, in February 2004. WineDiva is the alter ego of Daenna Van Mulligen. She wears a cork tiara and is proof that a girl can have her w(h)ine and drink it too! WineDiva.ca is a tongue-in-cheek approach to a very serious passion for all things wine. WineDiva’s goal is to make wine fun, subtly educational & deviously inspirational. Vintage reciting wine snobs need not apply. WineDiva is painting the wine world pink and drinking it all in, and her glass is always (at least) half-full.

WineScores is the more serious follow up to WineDiva.ca. WineScores was born from the demand to see wine writer Daenna Van Mulligen provide scores on her wine reviews. These are numerical scores based on a 100 point scale – an internationally recognized form of rating wines. These numbers provide a snapshot for consumers on how the wine reviewer views the overall quality of the wine. For more information on scoring wine, go to “about”.
