Burrowing Owl Estate Winery Merlot, Okanagan Valley BC
Readers rated this wine:
Savoury, brooding, meaty.
This Merlot was harvested from estate vineyards in Oliver and Osoyoos, was put through a malolactic (second) fermentation and matured in a mix of French (primarily), Hungarian and American oak barrels for 14 months. Always a powerful and often brooding Merlot, this vintage stays true. Black chocolate, plums and prune, wild sage, toasted brown spice, tar, tobacco and vanilla aromas dominate. The palate echos the nose with black fruit, charred black chocolate and leather flavours. A savoury, full-bodied and meaty red with a spicy finish.

Burrowing Owl Estate Winery Cabernet Franc, Okanagan Valley BC
Readers rated this wine:
Fragrant, fresh, smooth.
The Cab Franc grapes came from the Burrowing Owl Vineyard in Oliver and the estate Keller and Eva vineyards in Osoyoos. Post fermentation the wine was moved into separate mixed origin barrels for malolactic fermentation followed by 18 months of ageing. Expect a fragrant wine with aromas of cherries and licorice, cola, mocha and purple flowers. The palate is smooth and fresh with bright cherry flavours along with leather, tobacco, brown spice and dark biscuits. Nice balance and length--this wine delivers. My favourite of the red wine portfolio at BOV.

Chateau Haut-Mazieres, Bordeaux, France
Readers rated this wine:
Fragrant, fresh, classic.
This Cabernet Sauvignon (20%), Cabernet Franc (15%) and Merlot (65%) blend offers great value! The cuvee is different from last vintage which was predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon.
Excellent entry level Bordeaux that will satisfy. Expect a fragrant wine with cassis and cherry pipe tobacco, pencil shavings, licorice, leather, brown spice and chocolate aromas. On the palate it's more high-toned red fruit; it's juicy and medium-bodied. Fresh and smooth with powdery cocoa tannins.

Adria Vini 'Italia' Sangiovese, Puglia, Italy
Readers rated this wine:
Approachable, juicy, fruity.
This super approachable red from Boutinot (france) and Araldica (Italy) is the perfect pizza wine. Consistently charming, I like this wine served with a slight chill! Raspberry and cherry cola, roses, fine spice and tobacco aromas lead to a juicy and lighter-bodied palate. It reminds me a bit of an old school Valpolicella; fresh, high-toned red fruit and just a hint of spice.

Marques de la Concordia 'Rioja Santiago' Reserve, Rioja, Spain
Readers rated this wine:
Charming, fragrant, mature.
Marques de la Concordia has been making wine in Spain for over 150 years. This 100% Tempranillo comes from vines grown in the Alta and Alavesa Rioja, Spain's most prestigious winemaking region. Being a 2018 it has some age, in part 24 months in a mix of French and American oak, then more in bottle. Expect a fragrant wine with strawberry compote and dried cherry, tobacco, cedar, saddle leather and star anise. It's leads with high-toned red fruit layered with spice and cigar flavours. Medium-bodied with attractive tertiary character from maturity, it is also charming and drinking nicely now. Pair with game, lamb, aged cheeses and rich tomato-based sauces. ©copyright 2024 Daenna Van Mulligen
