Susana Balbo' BenMarco Expresivo', Gualtallary, Uco Valley, Mendoza, Argentina
Readers rated this wine:
Velvety, fresh, complete.
Gualtallary is located in Mendoza's higher Uco Valley, which is where the Malbec (with 15% Cab Franc) grapes come from for the BenMarco Expresivo. Gualtallary is a remote rocky slice of Tupungato, with vineyards up to 1600MASL rooted in poor alluvial soils with significant quantities of calcium carbonate and sand resulting in fresh, intense yet elegant wines. The area is know for Cab Franc, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauv Blanc as well as Malbec. I was first introduced to this region, and it's excellent wines, several years ago, when I visited the still incomplete and remote Zorzal Winery.
This wine spent 14 months in 30% new French oak before bottling.
Splashy notes of sweet black raspberry, vanilla and violets are laced with chocolate and baking spice. A seamlessly woven palate boasts expressive generous purple fruit, bright acidity and sweet tannins. Velvety yet postured--a very complete red that is ridiculously delicious. ©copyright 2021 Daenna Van Mulligen
