Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz, South Australia, 2003
Readers rated this wine:
There is nothing 'baby' about this 'Baby Grange'!
The 389 must feel obligated to live up to its famous older brother-Grange when it takes up residence previously held by said older sibling (in Grange's barrels).
But for sheer price and availability the 389 is a worthy second choice.
Burly and robust with aromas of crushed coffee beans, blackberries and black cherry, eucalyptus, spice and vanilla with a whiff of game meat.
In the mouth the 389 is intense with tight, layered flavours of dark fruit, chocolate, earth and charred oak. It's a deep, dark and mysterious wine, full-bodied and chewy with gripping tannins.
Little brother's got huge attitude!
