Schiopetto Tocai Friulano Collio, Friuli Italy, 2006
Readers rated this wine:
Unrelated to Alsatian Tokay Pinot Gris (which is now called simply Pinot Gris) and not the same as Tokaji (the dessert wine made from Furmint in Hungary), the Tocai (all three pronounced the same) Friulano is another grape entirely - classic to Friuli in north-eastern Italy. And soon, it too may be pressured into being trimmed - into simply Friulano.
But here and now, 2006 was an unusual vintage, a hot vintage, producing wines of substantial alcohol levels - this one included at 14.5%.
Golden-hued with clean terroir-driven minerality, apricots, lemon zest, orange rind and fresh floral notes. On the palate its bold flavours echo the aromas, it has an oily texture and substantial weight with warm spice on the finish.
A substantial white that would pair well with a rich, creamy polenta.
